November CRUSH Update

December 8, 2017

STEAM Night:

CRUSH participated in Sonoran Science Academy’s annual STEAM Night on November 2nd. During STEAM night, SSA high schoolers presented their science-based projects to family and friends. CRUSH, and other STEM clubs at our school, had the opportunity to demonstrate our robots and engage with our school community. Also at the event, CRUSH unveiled our 2017 recap video to the audience.

Food Bank:

Once a month, CRUSH volunteers at a local Tucson food bank. On the 8th, our members spent two hours of the evening packaging meals for families. In two hours, 22 team members packaged over 11,000 meals. CRUSH mentor, Toni Ramos Hickman, stated that “It is hugely important to make these types of community connections outside normal STEM activities.” We will be back at the food bank on December 13th.

FLL Tournament:

On November 17th & 18th, CRUSH hosted our 3rd annual FLL Tournament at SSA-Tucson. At the event, local teams of 4th-8th graders were able to compete and present their Hydrodynamics themed projects. 33 CRUSH members set up the tournament and helped fill key volunteer roles like referees, judges, and field reset. Daniel, a first year CRUSH member, said, “It was really cool to be able to help the kids have a fun and beneficial experience with robotics.” CRUSH will also be helping run the second Tucson FLL Tournament this weekend, on Dec. 8th and 9th.

2017 Arizona Bowl:

On December 29th, you can see CRUSH and our Championship winning robot at the Community Corner of the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. As a fundraiser, CRUSH is selling tickets to the Bowl Game, and will receive 50% of the profits from each ticket sold.
